RACE WEEKEND INFORMATION

The Byron Bay Ocean Paddle 2010 is set for some new and exciting changes. Along with our 12km Classic Race on Saturday we have introduced a second race for the weekend on Sunday July 18th. 

The second race held on Sunday 18th July will be a Downwind Event from either Lennox Head to Main Beach Byron Bay (if a southerly wind blows) or from Brunswick Heads to Main Beach Byron Bay (if the northerly blows).

Open to Ocean Skis, Specs and SUP's, Sundays race will be a great way for Ocean Racing enthusiasts to take on some new coastline with the Byron Bay backdrop to provide a fitting setting for an awesome race.

If starting from Lennox the event will be approx 20 km long and Brunswick Heads 18kms long. Saturdays Race starts at 2:00 pm at The Wreck in Byron Bay and Sundays Race will start at 1:00pm.

Race registration will be open at Byron Bay Surf Club from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday and 10:30 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday (Sat late rego $50.00). 

Registration for the Sunday event will also take place at Byron Bay Surf Club on Sunday morning from 10:00am to 11:00am.  We will be arranging some transportation for some skis and competitors to the downwind starting point and will post details as soon as possible. 

Race organisers will announce the starting point for Sundays event closer to the weekend once forecasts have been taken into account. Maps will available for drivers to make to help make their way to the Race start.

EVENT MANAGEMENT AND SAFETY

Race organisers aim to run this event for the enjoyment of all competitors and aim to eliminate and reduce the risks posed to competitors as much as realistically possible.

Saturday 17th July 12km: 

* Lifejackets are OPTIONAL for competitors in this event

* Leashes are COMPULSORY in this event 

* Mobile Phones are OPTIONAL in this event

* Official Race shirts will be COMPULSORY in this event.

Sunday 18th July Downwind Event:

* Lifejackets are COMPULSORY for all competitors

* Leashes are COMPULSORY for all competitors.

* Official Race shirts will be COMPULSORY  in this event.

* Mobile Phones in Dry Bags are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We will have a specific Race Phone for competitors to use if in distress and this will be available for competitors to store in their phones at registration.

 Unlike Ocean racing in most other areas you will be paddling past slightly remote and hard to access areas during the Downwind event. 

Organisers have the right to alter both courses on both days and use alternatives venues if weather and conditions are determined to be unsuitable for the competitors. Organisers will have a small number of Lifejackets available for loan on Sunday . Alternative courses may include a lap styled race instead of the downwind event, or flatwater event at other locations.
