Big Swells for Ocean Paddlers

Great to read about your chilly winter paddles. We would love to join you!!!
Iam a veteran Tassie ski/kayak competitor/coach and I thought I would tell you about our winter training. Our paddlers train and race all year apart from a rest after the Aussies. From May we begin a series of 10-15klm river races with the multi sport fraternity. This includes huge events such as the Huon Challenge and Freycinet Challenge events with about 500 competitors (100+paddlers) in each. From August we begin the northern Tassie Kayak Winter series and clubbie marathon series. These take us up to November when the annual ocean paddle series happens. (www.southernpaddlers.com).
Most races feature about 50 paddlers.
Our Clifton Beach (near Hobart) based squad (1 of about 3 groups around Hobart) of about 20 paddlers train 3-4 sessions weekly at the moment, some mornings and nights...usually in the dark and temps about 8-10 degrees although often down to under 5 with wind chill and sometimes snow.....! Is it any wonder many eventually head to Qld to live and train!!!!!
We have full coverage gear; wetsuit leggings,booties, hand protectors and often beanies...bogin paddlers!!
Some of our squad are training for the Coolangattta Gold and often finish a cold paddle with a run!!
Our currrent strength is in a new crew of junior
paddlers, 3 of whom finished 5th in the u/17 ski relay in Perth.
Many of our paddlers race both ocean skis (FENNS and V10S, spec skis and kayaks.
