Calm Conditions make for good race
By host @ 9:45 PM :: 510 Views :: 2 Comments ::

Good morning all.
We conducted our 2 nd August Ocean paddle last Sunday and the response was good. The day was as good as it gets and the calm conditions allowed most paddlers to log quality performances.
A big thanks to the Kawana mob for their appearance especially Brad who added a bit of class to the 13K journey over to Twin Waters shark nets and back. In all the numbers were good and the grudge races made for good viewing as I paddled along in the middle of the field.

There are always stories after a paddle and Sunday was no different, even with John G out with a cold. Vypo and Dave O went at it hard for the first 6.5K. Then the legendary gibbons rudder got tangled as Dave cut the corner tightly on the net cans allowing Vypo to bolt. The ongoing battle between Buck & Ferg continued with Buck setting a blistering pace to the turnaround but fading allowing Ferg to come back at him.

Paddle of the day was judged to be that of Marcus Jones who revelled in the light conditions and finished on the heals of Buck and Ferg and they looked worried.

Great paddles from Baz, Woz and little Amy Burridge .

Next race is scheduled for Sunday 30th Aug at 8am.
If you are an experienced paddler Kirk Jarrett has a group doing a paddle back from Caloundra to Mooloolaba every second Sat afternoon.

Keep your eyes on the web for details of the next 2 international races. They are The USA Champs in San Francisco and the bay paddle in Chicago.

Epic Kayaks - Demo - Brissbane
By host @ 4:53 AM :: 772 Views :: 0 Comments ::

Please let me know if anyone out there would like to attend an Epic demo and group paddle on the Brisbane River on Saturday 1st August. Time is yet to be fixed.

If you live in or know someone who lives in Brissy and they are looking for a group to paddle with then this may suit or if you know of any paddler who wants to try the “Epic boats” this could be a good oportunity.

There are a few groups who paddle from different areas in Brisbane and I would like to try to pull them all together maybe once a month.

Last Weeks Ocean Paddle
By host @ 4:50 AM :: 523 Views :: 0 Comments ::

Sundays paddle at Mooloolaba went off without to many problems; however I am led to believe that nearly half the field had to portage across the bar at the Maroochy river mouth. That’s the price paid for cutting the corner. The course kept everyone on their toes because of the rip tide.
Paddle of the day was given to Woz whom I think had a bit of an advantage after the portage training last race.

A small group ventured down to Byron for the pro race where 126 paddlers faced the starter. That is a great number and it was a great spectacle. A picture perfect day and a very well run race.
Gold coast paddlers dominated but good results were seen from Paul Green & Nathan Day while Dave2 was left waiting for the other 124 paddlers to back-paddle back to the start line.” Right, like that’s going to happen”. After a couple of ‘Coopers” (Sponsors) on the deck at the surf club all was forgotten.

Jeremy Cotter won the long race while Kurt Jarrott won the sprint. Dave Kissane was 5th and picked up the over 40 win.

Noosa surf club threw a bus load down the motorway and by all accounts had a fun trip back, courtesy of ‘Coopers”. Great work boys.

Dates to keep in mind – August 30th 20K paddle from Caloundra to Mooloolaba. BBQ at the club afterwards. Row for cancer in early September.

Next sunshine coast paddle – 8am Sunday 2nd  August
See you out there.

Ocean Paddlers numbers are growing
By host @ 11:10 PM :: 541 Views :: 0 Comments ::

Hi all and a big well done to everyone who joined in the 14 km Ocean paddle for the great roll up.

The morning started well with clear sunny skys and little wind but the old girl can change things in an instant and we saw that with a rapid increase in the westerly wind. From calm to 30kph in 15 mins. I wish I could do that. A poor miscalculation by the ocean paddler organiser saw a simple 12K paddling course turn out to be a 14K ocean paddle slog. It was tough day out and the hot shower and a good coffee made the stories just get better. Although we have very few rules I must admit that when Woz tried to portage around Point Cartwright I think he was stretching things just a little and his poor judgement on the waters depth had a few of us paddlers at the back chuckling even more. Well done though Woz you must have been frozen after that as to was Matt, who after only 3 or 4 mins of ocean racing, decided he was a bit on the hot side and dived off his surf ski. To his credit, and quick as a whip (or was it because he saw me coming up behind) he said ”just taking the temperature”. Right!!!

Commiserations to Marcus who arrived late and therefore did not get his name taken for the lucky draw. Number 31 com out and that would have been you buddy.

A big thankyou to Rod Whitterman for making the trip down from Noosa (a day off kayaks noosa hay Rod)  but I think if we were handing out fines Rod would get one for murdering all the wildlife that was still hiding on and in the ozflyte ocean ski that had not seen the ocean for a couple of years. John Gordon gets a big thumbs up for being so enthusiastic all the time. He never has a bad word to say about anything. He loves the cold, rough and long stuff.

Ocean Paddle of the week goes to Dave O. He chased the Ocean racing Epics all over the ocean on his gibbons surf ski and stayed in touch the whole time. You can pick your Ocean Paddler ‘T’ shirt up any time.

A few newcomers to thank -  Jamie, a young female kayak paddler from Mooloolaba SLSC and Craig who was up from Brisbane for his first paddle in our waters on his red7.
The next race will be Sunday 18th July at 8am. See ya there.

Ocean Paddlers numbers are growing so tell your friend and join the fun......

Big Swells for Ocean Paddlers
By host @ 9:37 PM :: 695 Views :: 1 Comments ::

Sunday 21sts Ocean Paddlers race was not greatly supported by our paddling members however the dozen or so paddlers who did turn out tested themselves over a 3 x 5K paddle course.

The swell was up and the first 5K, over to Alexandra headlands and back, tested all and broke a few. Big John Gordon fell foul of the powerful whitewater and showed his swim skills. Dave O showed a clean pair of heals while the field dodged and weaved their way through the bar swells. After completing the first 5K the course went up the river for a 2nd 5K paddle loop around Mooloola island.

Well done to Buck Roger for collecting almost all the fishing lines from the end of the rock wall on one rudder. Sadly, Jen Rogers’ search for a mystery crab pot hanging off her rudder led to nothing. It was just the strong tide running out.

All in all a good hard 16K paddle hit out. Good work to all Ocean paddlers those who took part.
Next meeting of the Ocean Paddlers is on the 5th July at 8AM see you fellow paddlers there.
Keep in mind the following events – August- Sunshine Coast Ocean Paddlers “long way round” river paddle and BBQ, September – Row for Cancer

See you out there

The Virgins Ocean Paddle
By host @ 5:56 AM :: 656 Views :: 0 Comments ::

The virgins ocean paddle run went off without a hitch yesterday morning. The 16K course ocean paddle around Mudjimba Island is a must for all.

A good northerly breeze greeted the crew and most were appreciative of the following wind on the way home.

A big well done to the couple of ocean paddlers who braved the conditions that they new were slightly out of there scope. Especially Lori and Brad. Next time we here one of you may be on the back of a double ski with Wynn Mitchell to gain a little more experience.

Top effort by John Gordon, Tash, Jack, Maddy, Marcus, Garry  and Simon  All virgins ocean paddlers no more.

Special thanks to Matt Carter who stayed over after the outrigger race on sat and showed his class by being the first ocean paddler home.

To those who didn’t make to The virgins ocean paddle run there is always next time. That will be Sunday two weeks time at 8am at the spit.

New members – Mick Smith, who has a pedigree as long as your arm on OC1s , Brad Nelson who has just started paddling, Lori, another first timer,

Thanks

Top international paddlers head to Durban
By host @ 5:52 AM :: 574 Views :: 0 Comments ::

Mens Health Surf Ski Series

The world’s best surfski paddlers are set to converge on Durban between 10 and 12 July for the fifth SA Surfski World Cup. This year the event has been buoyed by a new title sponsor in the form of Dunlop Tyres, who have their head office in Durban.

Dunlop’s title sponsorship of the Dunlop Surfski World Cup in Durban, translates to a meaningful cash prize purse of R110 000, with the first-placed paddler taking home a whopping R40 000 for his efforts on the day.

The Dunlop Surfski World Cup is raced over 32km of open ocean in a downwind format, which means the race course will be determined by the wind conditions on race day. The event will start at the new Durban Point Waterfront from the Durban Undersea Club, and finish at either Westbrook Beach on the North Coast or Winklespruit Beach on the South Coast.

Surfski paddlers’ skill at riding deep ocean swells will be tested to the maximum with the winners expecting to complete the 32km in just short of two hours. Paddlers will be averaging over 16km/h for
the 32km of Open Ocean. The Dunlop Surfski World Cup is the final race of the Discovery Men’s Health Surfski Series in Durban.

2009 Avon Decent
By host @ 7:42 PM :: 644 Views :: 0 Comments ::

Hi Fellow Paddlers,

The organisers of the Western Australia's Avon Descent are encouraging paddlers from the East Coast to travel over for the event. They are offering half price entry. They have also happy to discuss providing boats on arrival or subsidising boat transport from the eastern states for teams.

I competed in the event in 1996 in a team of four single competitors and it to 13 hours over two days and can highly recommend this race to anybody who is up for a challange. It's a two race through some amazing country. Most people do it in teams but solo would be a good challenge.

The water peaked at 2 metres (Walyunga)- My highest level ever and the biggest race-day since 1996. The Arrow was a handful but we got down in 9 hours 40

Molokai photosLots of water under the bridge between races this time. Some of the best swells we have seen at the river mouth at Mooba in fact. I hope you all got amongst them.

One person in particular can vouch for the ferocity of the waves. Paul “Buck” Rogers, now a television personality, blew his ski apart on a large wave last weekend. From where I was sitting, on the wave behind, it was scary, spectacular and to some, comical. He survived the smashing but I think the swim took its toll.

Well a bunch of die-hards punched out a good 13.5K last weekend. We opted for a river paddle because of the wind and debris across the river mouth. It was not as bad as any of us expected and it made the coffee taste better knowing that we had done a good hit out.

While we were drowning and getting blown away back here in oz the boys were relaxing after a very flat Molokai. Take a look at some pics from Hawaii. There will be a big trip planned next year so stay tuned.

Next few Sunday outings are as follows – Sunday 7th June “Virgins Paddle” Around Mudjimba Island,  21st June 15K .

We are planning a few events down the track. These include a river paddle on the Maroochy river followed by a  BBQ at cotton tree. Stay tuned.

See ya there Sunday week
Remember you can test paddle any epic ski at these races. Simply call me to arrange it.

What is Molokai...
By host @ 4:35 AM :: 503 Views :: 0 Comments ::

The Molokai Challenge

The Molokai Challenge, recognized as the World Surf Ski Championship, is the title watermen covet most. The solo race begins near the west end of the island of Molokai, crosses the volatile Ka’iwi Channel — considered one of the roughest ocean channels in the world - and finishes at Koko Marina on the island of Oahu - a distance of 28.2 Nautical Miles (52.2 km)

The 2009 race is the 33rd annual crossing, counting the 1976 solo effort by Kailua physician Dale Adams. Adams called his crossing “the challenge of the day,” but it has since developed into the premier long-distance, open ocean, solo crossing in the world. The race boasts an admirable safety record. In the three decades paddlers have been crossing the channel there has never been an accident. Probably the most serious condition experienced by any entrant has been mild sunburn, some dehydration and - after 32 miles of non-stop paddling - fatigue.

Nevertheless because of the rough conditions and difficulty of the race, participants are screened for their level of paddling skill. Safety rules require each paddler to be accompanied by an escort boat during the crossing and new ways of tracking the paddlers are being researched to increase the safety of the race.

Mothers Day Paddle

Wow what a great morning. Some one up there had smiled on all the mums on their day.

For those of you who did not see the full moon early this morning it was spectacular.

A good crew took in the beauty of the morning and bashed out a couple of 5K efforts. It was probably the best morning of the year so far.

Next outing in two weeks will be a 14K out and back for the good paddlers and a 5K flat paddle for the novices.

See you all there.

This morning 11 paddlers made the effort and knocked out a snappy 11-12k A very special thanks to the biggest name in surf ski racing, no not the Big O but our own CR or Robo. Heart rate barely registered on the Garmin while those around him were busting pooper valves. Clint is very clear about his intentions for the up-coming Molokai World champs in Hawaii and it is very special for him to take time out to show just how well he is going and how slow we mere mortals are. Thanks again to all who paddled. The next outing is scheduled for April 26th at 7am
